A Parasite That Survives Water Treatment

Cryptosporidium is particularly troubling for water systems because it is extremely resilient.

Unlike many microbes, it can survive normal chlorine disinfection used in water treatment plants.

This means that if filtration systems fail or contaminated water enters the supply, the parasite can pass straight through into household taps.

And it only takes a very small number of organisms to infect a person.

How Did It Get Into the Water?

Investigations pointed to a failure in the local water distribution infrastructure.

A faulty valve or system problem likely allowed contaminated water to enter the network.

Agricultural runoff from livestock areas is often a source of Cryptosporidium. The parasite commonly lives in the intestines of cattle and sheep and can reach reservoirs through animal waste.

Once inside a water system, it can spread rapidly.

The water company responsible for the supply, South West Water, later admitted in court that it had supplied water unfit for human consumption.

The outbreak resulted in:

What began as a microscopic parasite ended up costing an entire region millions.
